Interesting facts about rainbows

  1. Rainbows are optical illusions. It depends on the (sun) light is shining and where you stand. They are the result of the reflection of light.
  2. Rainbows are formed when light from the sun is refracted by a high level of moisture in the air.
  3. The word Rainbow comes from the Latin Archus Pluvius, “rainy arch.”
  4. The Rainbow will appear not only when it rains but everywhere where there is water, like, e.g., nearby a waterfall, sea spray, foggy weather, or around a man-made fountain.
  5. Rainbows are full circles. But because we can only see them above the horizon, they appear to be a half-circle. But, e.g., pilots sometimes see the full circle as they have a much wider view.
  6. Two rainbows appearing at the same time are actually the same Rainbow. The secondary Rainbow (the less bright one) is the primary Rainbow but with inverted colors. Two rainbows appear when light is reflected twice in a waterdrop.
  7. The sky above the rainbow is darker above the rainbow than below it.
  8. Did you ever hear of Moonbows? Not only the sun can cause a rainbow. Also, the moon can create them. This is very rare as they happen only by night and when the moon is very bright. The colors are not so bright as with a normal rainbow, mostly white but all colors are still there.

Dispersion is determined to be the spreading of the white light into its complete spectrum of colors. In the Rainbow, the colors will be the same as the white light.

Nevertheless, the sunlight will enter the droplets of water and reflects as it occurs in a prism.

The light absorbed by water droplets will vanish, and the one that isn’t absorbed will be reflected and revealed as the color rather than white light. The magnificent colors you’ll see in the Rainbow are:

  1. Red
  2. Orange
  3. Yellow
  4. Green
  5. Blue
  6. Indigo
  7. Violet

These are the main colors of the Rainbow. Another interesting fact is that the sequence in which the colors appear is always the same.

The outermost color of the arc is red, and violet is the innermost color of the Rainbow (unless it is the secondary Rainbow, as described above).
