When talking about Dubai, you need to know a distinction. Dubai is both one of seven emirates (like states) of the UAE, but it is also the capital of the Emirate Dubai. The UAE consists of seven Emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al Quwain. Dubai is the most populated one.

The city is a preferred spot among wealthy travelers, and it offers a lot of luxury beachfront real estate on the man-made islands. The islands are actually two projects. One is the Palm Islands, consisting originally out of 3 Palm Islands: Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira (this is now Deira Islands). The construction of the Palm Islands started in 2001. However, only the Palm Jumeirah is finished so far. It’s presently the most prominent artificial island on the planet, with a land area of more than 1,380 acres.

Why Is Dubai Rich?

Did you know that the United Arab Emirates is the eight wealthiest nation in the world? A massive amount of its money comes from trade, tourism, and finance. The Dubai economy used to be mostly reliant on oil. But since the government decided to change to a more service- and tourism-oriented economy, this changed and resulted in the property boom from 2004 to 2008.

Tourism has taken a big flight in Dubai. In almost two decades, the number of visitors to Dubai has exploded. From about 3M visitors in 2000 to 16.7M in 2019, which is an increase of 457%.
