One of the most typical things that people do in their life is to compare themselves with others. One thing to keep in mind: don’t compare yourself to others. 

Competition is a brain game that will only make your life more challenging. Why? That’s because no matter how hard you try, you can’t be somebody else.

Only because someone else is successful by approaching situations somehow does not mean you will be as well.

That’s especially true if that is a new approach that you are not comfortable with. Their way is not better only because it is different from yours. 

Why do humans compare each other?

But do people compare themselves to one another? You see, humans have the desire to evaluate their capabilities and opinions and a drive to improve their abilities.

If you do not have an objective means to assess those things, you compare them with other people’s capabilities and opinions.

Why you should not compare yourself to others?

Are you guilty of comparing yourself to other people? Here’s why you should stop right away:

  • No one has a perfect life – You might assume that most people lead an extraordinary life without downsides. Please remember that this is not true.

    Every person experiences challenges and problems throughout their life. Others are only better at keeping it together, at least on the outside.

  • It will stall your progress – You will never get anything achieved if you devote your days comparing yourself to other people’s accomplishments.

    Invest your energy into following your dreams and goals. 
  • Comparison is the thief of happiness – Comparing yourself to other people will only make your life more challenging and brings you pain and misery.

    Try using others as motivation to do better and work harder.

Comparing yourself to others may seem natural, even healthy to evolve and know where you stand. Nonetheless, it’s also a source of negative thoughts, envy, and judgments about oneself.

Thus, it’s a significant source of self-esteem. Here are tips so you don’t compare yourself to others.

  1. Determine your strengths – Determining your successes, qualities, and resilience is vital to prevent comparing yourself with other people. Of course, it enables you to remove the feeling that others are doing better, accomplishing more than you, or having a better life.
  2. Practice gratitude – That will enable you to concentrate on what’s positive now in your life instead of thinking about the past. 
  3. Surround yourself with the right people – Try to surround yourself with people who will motivate you and inspire you in what you do.

  4. Accept yourself as you are – You have your insecurities, flaws, and fears. All of them make you who you are. From the negative, many positive things are born. Learn to differentiate between what can and what can’t.
  5. Motivate yourself without comparing – Admiring a person and being motivated by their journey and accomplishments can help you learn, surpass yourself and accomplish your goal. 

Don’t compare yourself. Either way, it is not good for you. It would be best if you instead celebrated your uniqueness. Because everybody is unique with their strengths, weaknesses, securities, and insecurities.

Instead of comparing and seeing what you’re missing, you should be celebrating yourself for the unique person that you are! Because there is nobody like you!
